Commentary

This is commentary on the recent publication of "William Grant Still" by Catherine Parsons Smith as released by the University of Illinois Press (2008).

The family of William Grant Still objects to this book as it relies on sensationalism, falsehood and character assasination to diminish the achievements of William Grant Still and his wife-collaborator, Verna Arvey. Further, the family is appalled that the University of Illinois Press would publish any such book that contains allegations of sex, violence, Black stupidity and failure that is intended for an educational venue. Needless to say, Catherine Parsons Smith has produced a book that degrades the work of an important figure in American history, William Grant Still.
